COL Chapman was commissioned into the Infantry from the United States Military Academy in 1998. He holds a BS in Engineering Physics from West Point, an MS in Nuclear Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University. COL Chapman has served in a variety of operational assignments that include service as a platoon leader and executive officer in 1-187 IN of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and commander of B/1-12 CAV and assistant operations officer in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Cavazos, Texas. He also served in the Pentagon as the Assistant Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of staff, G-3/5/7, Headquarters, Department of the Army. He has deployed in support of the Kosovo Peacekeeping Force, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. At West Point, COL Chapman served as an instructor and course director in the introductory physics course from 2010-2014. He returned to West Point in 2018 as an Academy Professor, serving as the core physics program director in 2019 before being selected as the Deputy Head in 2020. COL Chapman became the Department Head in 2024. COL Chapman's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (with two oak leaf clusters), Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), Combat Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, and Sapper Tab.
