Richard is an Associate Professor in American Politics in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, where he teaches courses in American politics, American presidency, legislative politics, homeland security, and political communication. As Director of Academic Programs and Strategic Communication, he leads several enrichment programs to include the American Politics Academic Individual Advanced Development program (internships), the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress Fellowship, the Sea to Shining Sea Fellowship, and the Taylor Scholars program. He is the author of "Emerging from the Shadows: Vice Presidential Influence in the Modern Era (SUNY Press, 2024), which explores the nature of vice presidential influence. Richard and his wife Rachel are the parents to two remarkable girls, Reagan and Kennedy.
