DPE Prospective Rotating Military Faculty

DPE Prospective Rotating Military Faculty

Join the DPE Team!

In the Department of Physical Education (DPE), we have an outstanding mix of rotating military officers and permanent civilian faculty with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Our faculty are proven leaders of operational units who are dedicated to careers in the U.S. Army. It's a great job in an exceptional work environment.

Current and incoming instructors represent all the commissioning sources (OCS, ROTC, USMA) and most Army branches. DPE instructors possess a variety of undergraduate degrees and professional experiences. Many current and incoming DPE instructors bring combat and operational deployment leadership experience. DPE officers maintain a lifestyle centered on physical fitness and wellness.

We are looking for instructors to develop warrior leaders of character who are physically fit and mentally tough by engaging cadets in activities that promote and enhance physical excellence.

What Would I Be Teaching?

DPE Instructors are assigned to one of four teaching committees - military movement (applied gymnastics), boxing, combatives, or aquatics (survival swimming). You will generally teach four sections in your committee per round (quarter), in addition to teaching one of our cognitive courses - PE215 Personal Fitness or PE450 Army Fitness Development. The fitness courses are lecture/lab courses that provide cadets with a baseline of knowledge and exposure to applications in wellness, personal fitness, and organizational fitness.

Depending on your interests and skills, you may also teach a variety of lifetime sports (e.g., strength development, golf, basketball, aerobic fitness, Alpine skiing, scuba, rock climbing, snowboarding, etc.).

What Are Some Opportunities to Advance in My Career?

DPE Instructors have the opportunity to attend graduate school at Texas A&M University, Indiana University, Appalachian State University, or University of Alabama. These programs offer master's degrees in kinesiology or exercise science and are designed to prepare officers for their instructional and leadership duties at USMA.

Programs of study generally include coursework in pedagogy, curriculum development, motor learning and control, and exercise physiology, while also providing opportunities to assist with teaching foundational physical education activity classes.

Each graduate program is one year in length and immediately precedes the instructor's three-year utilization tour at USMA.

Application packets are due by Nov. 1

Rotating military faculty consists of of active-duty captains, majors, and lieutenant colonels. An assignment to West Point as a rotating faculty member requires officers to submit an application through the CAC-enabled TEACH system

Department-Specific Questions and Requirements

You must be an Active-Duty Army 1LT(P) or CPT and submit a completed application by 01 November to be given full consideration. Officers selected in the December selection board will typically begin graduate school 18 months later in the summer.

The following eligibility criteria apply:

Must be branch qualified (CCC and Key Development job complete) prior to the start of graduate school, not before submitting your application to DPE.

Must be within the primary year groups identified in the application process. The oldest eligible year group criterion ensures Captains who serve a three-year instructor tour at West Point have sufficient time to become branch qualified as Majors before their primary zone (PZ) LTC Promotion board.

The United States Military Academy (USMA) is the sole college in the nation whose only responsibility is to prepare each student for professional service as a regular Army officer. Thus, the physical education taught in the West Point environment is comprised of experiential, cognitive, and psychomotor learning domains designed to promote critical thinking, disseminate knowledge, integrate discovery, and develop expertise.

Physical development provides leaders with:

  • skills
  • self-confidence
  • a warrior spirit
  • respect for fair play
  • a commitment to maintaining physical fitness

The impact of achieving these objectives is far-reaching and serves to strengthen the officer corps and the Army.

Once selected, officers attend graduate school at Texas A&M University, Indiana University, Appalachian State University or the University of Alabama, where they earn a master's degree in kinesiology or exercise science. Each program is one year in length and immediately precedes a three-year utilization tour at USMA

These degree programs are designed to prepare the officer for their duties at USMA. Coursework generally includes pedagogy, curriculum development, motor learning and control, and exercise physiology courses while also providing opportunities to assist in teaching foundational physical education activity classes.

Learn More about DPE

The mission of the Department of Physical Education is to build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps by challenging each cadet in activities that promote holistic health and optimal physical performance, commissioning physically fit and mentally tough leaders of character. The Department strives to cultivate a culture of physical fitness excellence that challenges cadets to realize their full potential.

Other Opportunities

It takes a team to ensure the U.S. Military Academy at West Point can fulfill its mission to build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets. There are roles for military and civilian faculty to teach cadets and for those both in and out of uniform to ensure the systems and processes required to operate a military installation and college campus are in place and running efficiently.
