About the Foreign Area Studies Majors
Cadets from the Department of English and World Languages (DEWL) can choose one of six majors to learn about the language, history, and culture of a foreign area through an interdisciplinary approach.
Each major offers an honors curriculum.
Africa Major
Cadets who major in Africa foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to Africa. Language electives focus on French or Portuguese. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich an Africa foreign studies major’s regional capabilities.
East Asia Major
Cadets who major in East Asia foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to East Asia. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich major’s regional capabilities. The Foreign Area Studies major is designed to develop those just starting to study Chinese and those with previous experience. Courses in this major focus on language, culture, and Chinese life. Class material will focus on functional language. At the advanced level, majors will focus on real-world news and documents.
Eurasia Major
Cadets who major in Eurasia foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to Eurasia. Language electives focus on Russian or Persian. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich the major’s regional capabilities.
Europe Major
Cadets who major in Europe foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to Europe. Language electives focus on German, French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich the major’s regional capabilities.
Latin American Major
Cadets who major in Latin America foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to Latin America. Language electives focus on Spanish or Portuguese. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich the major’s regional capabilities.
Middle East Major
Cadets who major in Middle East foreign area studies pursue an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global and regional issues related to the Middle East. Language electives focus on Persian or Arabic. Complementary support courses in the humanities and social sciences enrich major’s regional capabilities.
