Colonel Christopher Lowrance is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department and a Senior Research Scientist in the Robotics Research Center (RRC) at West Point. He is a native of Southern Indiana near Louisville, Kentucky. Upon graduating from the Virginia Military Institute as a ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army Signal Corps. His early company grade years were spent in Germany with the 32nd Signal Battalion, 22nd Signal Brigade, and V Corps Artillery, and during that overseas tour, he deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom I.
After returning stateside, Chris commanded D Company, 551st Signal Battalion, and D Company, 369th Signal Battalion at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He then became a network systems engineer (Functional Area 26A) and later joined the EECS Department after earning his master’s degree. Following his initial teaching assignment, Chris served as the Chief of Enterprise Operations at the Regional Cyber Center – Southwest Asia in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. After that deployment, he earned his Ph.D. and then returned to West Point where he served as the Deputy Director of the EE Program and one of the founding members of the RRC.
Following his second tour at West Point, Chris joined the Army’s newly activated Artificial Intelligence Task Force (AITF) in Pittsburgh, which later became the AI Integration Center (AI2C), serving as the unit’s Chief Autonomous Systems Engineer responsible for synergizing Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) research and development across Army Futures Command, as well as partners in the U.S. Department of Defense, academia, and industry. He later graduated with honors from the U.S. Army War College and then returned to West Point as an Academy professor (FA47).
