COL Aaron Hill is a professor, United States Military Academy (USMA), and head of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE), where he is responsible for teaching, scholarship, and leadership at both the academy and departmental levels.
Commissioned as an engineer officer from USMA in 1997, he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. COL Hill has served in a wide range of operational assignments worldwide, including deployments to Afghanistan and service in the Sinai Peninsula, Bosnia, and Croatia. He previously served in the former Department of Civil & Mechanical Engineering from 2006-2009 and again from 2016-2025.
He holds master’s degrees in engineering management from Missouri University of Science and Technology and civil engineering from Virginia Tech, as well as doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His teaching experience spans structural engineering, steel design, infrastructure systems, and construction management. Each spring, he co-teaches Project Management Professional (PMP) preparatory courses to the Department of Defense community.
COL Hill’s research interests include topics in structural engineering and engineering education. He is an active volunteer with the American Society of Civil Engineers and serves as the head officer representative for Army men’s basketball. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, a Project Management Professional, and a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
His previous military assignments include district support program manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes and Ohio River Division in Cincinnati, Ohio (2019); operations officer, Mission Command Center of Excellence, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, (2012-2013); and resident officer in charge, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Kunduz, Afghanistan (2011-2012).
COL Hill also served as operations officer, Task Force Sinai in Egypt (2009-2010); commander, Military District of Washington Engineer Company at Fort Belvoir, Virginia (2002-2004); and plans officer, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Belvoir, Virginia (2001-2002). Earlier assignments include engineer company executive officer and engineer battalion logistics officer, 91st Engineer Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas (1999-2000), and engineer platoon leader in the same battalion during deployments to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina (1997-1999).
