Department of Physical Education
Dr. Dan Furlong is an assistant professor and director of competitive sports in the Department of Physical Education (DPE) at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia; a master's degree in education concentrating in biomechanics from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in athletic administration from St. John's University in Queens, New York.
His awards include the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service and the Civilian Service Achievement Medal.
As the director of competitive sports, Dr. Furlong oversees the two Character in Sport programs stewarded by DPE - competitive club athletics, consisting of 16 nationally competitive club teams, and company Athletics, an intramural-based sport education-modeled program.
He teaches on the Combatives Committee and holds his Modern Army Combatives Level 2 certification. Before coming to West Point 10 years ago, he was the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the New York Knicks.
Dr. Furlong is in his 34th year as the sports medicine concierge for Sports Properties Events at Madison Square Garden, covering college basketball, college hockey, college wrestling, professional bull riders, professional boxing, and UFC events.
He has been happily married to his wife, Lisa, for 26 years. They have four amazing children - their daughter, Trinity, and three sons, Daniel, Logan, and Jaxon.
