LTC Garrett Gatzemeyer is an academy professor in the Department of History & War Studies at the United States Military Academy.
Originally from Fruitland, Idaho, Garrett graduated from the USMA in 2007 as a military intelligence (MI) officer. His first assignment was with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord as an assistant battalion S2 and, while deployed in Diyala Province, Iraq, as a signals intelligence platoon leader. Following the MI Captains Career Course, Garrett served in the 470th MI Brigade in Fort Sam Houston, Texas where he commanded the Headquarters and Headquarters Company. He then attended graduate school at the University of Kansas, earning a master’s degree and doctorate in history, and returned to West Point to teach in the military division of the Department of History (2016-19).
Following this assignment, Garrett transitioned to Functional Area 59 (Strategist) and joined the US European Command’s J-5 as a contingency planner in Stuttgart, Germany. Garrett subsequently served on the International Military Staff at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, as a strategic plans and policy officer specializing in forces-related issues.
Garrett returned once again to West Point in 2026, rejoining the Department of History & War Studies as the chief of the Department’s military division.
