COL(R) Joseph P. Hanus is an associate professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the United States Military Academy. He is also the associate director of the Center for Applied Engineering.
He commissioned as an engineer officer from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1990 after serving six years in the Wisconsin National Guard. He served in Germany as a platoon leader and staff officer in the 130th Engineer Brigade and later commanded a combat engineer company in the 44th Engineer Battalion.
He also served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a deputy district commander in Galveston, Texas; a project officer for Task Force Restore Iraqi Oil; and as the deputy Transatlantic Division commander (forward) in Kuwait during Operation Inherent Resolve.
COL Hanus holds a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include engineering education, rapid bridge construction, fiber-reinforced plastic materials and infrastructure systems. He has taught courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics, structural engineering, construction management and transportation systems.
He is a licensed professional engineer.
Key career positions include civil engineering program director, USMA (2013-20210) and deputy division commander (forward), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (2015). He was senior faculty in the Civil Engineering program, USMA (2007-2013); deputy program manager, Northern Iraq Project Office – Restore Iraqi Oil for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (2003). From 2003-2004, he served as deputy commander of the Galveston District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Earlier assignments include assistant professor, Civil Engineering program, USMA (1999- 2003); company commander, B Company, 44th Engineer Battalion in Korea (1996-1997); brigade plans officer, 130th Engineer Brigade in Germany (1991-994); and platoon leader, Wisconsin National Guard (1988-1990).
