COL (Ret.) Joseph P. Hanus was commissioned as an engineer officer from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1990 after serving six years in the Wisconsin National Guard. He served in Germany as a platoon leader and staff officer in the 130th Engineer Brigade, and later commanded a combat engineer company in the 44th Engineer Battalion.
He also served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a deputy district commander in Galveston, Texas; a project officer for Task Force Restore Iraqi Oil; and as the deputy Transatlantic Division commander (forward) in Kuwait during Operation Inherent Resolve.
COL (Ret.) Hanus holds a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include engineering education, rapid bridge construction, fiber-reinforced plastic materials and infrastructure systems. He has taught courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics, structural engineering, construction management and transportation systems.
He is a licensed professional engineer.
