Dr. Lauren Bergey is an assistant dean and Academic Success and Retention coordinator in the Registrar’s Office and an associate professor in the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences at the United States Military Academy. 

She received a doctorate in ecology and evolution from Rutgers University in 2007, a master's degree in biology from East Carolina University in 2000, and a bachelor's degree in marine biology from Millersville University in 1994. 

Bergey's research has focused on the impacts of pollutants on the behavior, growth, and survivorship of populations of fiddler crabs in estuaries, an invasive species of shrimp in the coastal waters of New Jersey, and maternal genetics and egg characteristics of Atlantic Coast striped bass on the eastern seaboard. 

She spent several years in pharmaceutical research and development before earning her master’s degree. She has also conducted research in canine cognition and has a certified therapy dog that visits nursing homes, hospitals, veterans' housing, shelters, and schools. 

Bergey is married to Roderick Coward, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former lieutenant.
