CPT Matthew DeGennaro is an instructor of philosophy in the Department of Law & Philosophy at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
He commissioned as a transportation officer through the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 2017. As a lieutenant, he served in 1st Battalion, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, as a distribution platoon leader, battalion S3, and maintenance company executive officer.
From 2021 to 2024, CPT DeGennaro served with the 16th Sustainment Brigade in Germany, including service as an operations officer with the 39th Transportation Battalion and as commander of the 635th Transportation Detachment.
CPT DeGennaro holds a master of arts in philosophy from Arizona State University and a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His research interests include just war theory, virtue ethics, and the relationship between institutions and individual moral agency.
He and his wife, Breanna have been married since 2018 and have two children, Michael and Charlotte.
