LTC Matt Magennis is an assistant professor and fitness education director in the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy (USMA).
Hailing from Hackettstown, New Jersey, he commissioned as a second lieutenant in the aviation branch upon graduating from USMA in 2002, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. After completing flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, LTC Magennis served as a platoon leader and battalion logistics officer in the 4-101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
After completing the Captains Career Course at Fort Rucker, he served as an assistant brigade operations officer in the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Drum, New York. LTC Magennis commanded HHC, 3-10 GSAB, and A Company, 3-10 GSAB. Following command, he earned a master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Virginia and went on to serve as an instructor and testing officer in USMA's Department of Physical Education.
After completing Intermediate Level Education, LTC Magennis served as a brigade aviation officer in the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and as a battalion operations officer in the 3-4th Aviation Battalion at Fort Carson, Colorado. He later earned a doctorate in health and human performance from the University of Florida. He has deployed multiple times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
He is married to Kelby Elizabeth Scheifler, and they have two daughters, Mabel and Goldie.
