LTC Patrick Mugg

LTC Patrick Mugg is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at the United States Military Academy (USMA), where he has been teaching since 2025. He also taught within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at USMA from 2012-2015 and 2021-2024, and within the Department of Systems Engineering from 2024-2025.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from USMA in 2003, and was commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer with the first duty station at Fort Riley, Kansas. While there, he served as a BDE Assistant S2 within 3rd BDE, 1st Armored Division and deployed to Iraq during OIF I. Following his first deployment he moved to 1-13 Armor Battalion within 3-1 AD and served as an A/S2 and deployed a second time to Iraq during OIF III. Following his second deployment he transitioned to 2-70 Armor BN and served as the BN S2.
Following the MICCC, CPT Mugg volunteered for a third deployment to Iraq as part of a National Police Transition Team, helping to train and advise an Iraqi National Police BDE. After returning from this deployment, he was assigned to Fort Huachuca to instruct and lead within the MIBOLC schoolhouse.
In 2010, MAJ Mugg was selected to teach within the Department of Mathematical Science as USMA and started graduate school at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he earned an M.S. in Applied Mathematics. Following his first tour at West Point, MAJ Mugg was then assigned to Fort Bragg, NC where he served as the BDE S2 within the 82nd ABNDIV Sustainment BDE, as a BN XO within the 525th EMIB, and then as a Corps G2/G5 Planner within the XVIII ABN Corps.
Following his time at Fort Bragg, MAJ Mugg was selected fora second teaching assignment within the Department of Mathematical Sciences and returned to the Naval Postgraduate School to earn his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. After completing his doctorate, LTC Mugg transferred to Functional Area 49, Operations Research Systems Analyst (ORSA) and returned to West Point in 2021. LTC Mugg’s planned retirement is in the summer of 2028.
