LTC Hummel is an assistant professor who teaches biology and general chemistry courses in the Department of Chemical & Biological Science & Engineering and Center for Molecular Science at the United States Military Academy.
He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in December 2005 as a chemical officer. Upon completion of company command, he transitioned to Functional Area 52, nuclear and counter-weapons of mass destruction.
LTC Hummel's experiences span both the tactical and operational levels and include service in armor, light infantry and Stryker units, as well as specialized organizations such as a nuclear disablement team. He has operational experience in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He holds two master's degrees - one in free radical and radiation biology from the University of Iowa and another in chemical and physical biology from Vanderbilt University. In 2023, he earned a doctorate in biology from Boston College.
