About the Center

Music permeates every aspect of daily life, with lasting effects on individuals and communities – shaping health and wellness, readiness and resilience, social cohesion, national identity, and diplomacy. Music and sound offer a unique lens for understanding human behavior, performance, and values within complex operational and sociological environments.

Established in 2018, the West Point Music Research Center (WPMRC) conducts research on behalf of the United States Military Academy, the U.S. Army, and the Department of Defense. The center enhances cadet education and faculty scholarship in support of USMA’s academic pillars by applying multidisciplinary research to the study of music, sound, and their far‑reaching effects on cognition, emotion, and culture.

WPMRC supports cadet research, conducts original studies, compiles related scholarship, and facilitates workshops, lectures, and experiential learning experiences that contribute to the development of future Army leaders of character.
