West Point Transforms to Address Future Warfare Challenges
WEST POINT, N.Y. – As the battlefield continues to rapidly evolve, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has launched two transformations to prepare graduates to lead now and through the next evolution of warfare.
First, West Point established the Department of English and World Languages. How we communicate—in any language and across any culture—significantly impacts strategic relationships and the military’s ability to fight and win the nation’s wars. The alignment of experts in literature, culture, and language acquisition will ensure graduates can communicate precisely and effectively in support of U.S. interests around the globe
Second, the academy established the Department of Law and Philosophy. New technologies and domains of warfare are pushing the laws of armed conflict to its limits. Aligning law and philosophy will prepare graduates to remain true to the constitution, the law, and their ethical obligations when faced with unanticipated challenges.
From new domains like space and cyber to large scale ground combat operations around the globe, West Point must always focus on how best to prepare its graduates.
As Dean of the Academic Board Brig. Gen. Shane Reeves explains, “West Point will continuously adapt to ensure our graduates can design and implement solutions to complex problems on the modern battlefield.”
