COL Bret P. VanPoppel, Ph.D Professor and Department Head Professor of Mechanical Engineering Bret.VanPoppel@westpoint.edu Biography Colonel Bret P. Van Poppel serves as Professor, USMA (PUSMA) and Department Head. He serves as Head Officer Representative for the Army West Point Men’s Swimming and Diving teams. His research interests include experimental fluid mechanics, computational modeling of energy sciences, engineering education, and technical communications for engineers. Colonel Van Poppel served as the United States Military Academy Liaison Officer to Headquarters, Department of the Army, from August 2019 to December 2020, responsible for establishing relationships between USMA and the Army Secretariat and Army Staff, providing insight into the Army’s priorities and direction, and creating opportunities for the Academy to partner with and support Army organizations and objectives. From July 2010 – October 2011, he served as Deputy Director and Assessment Quality Officer, Afghanistan Assessment Group, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Colonel Van Poppel commissioned an Infantry officer in 1992, with notable assignment as a Platoon Leader in 2-75th Ranger and Rifle Company Commander in B/1-506th IN.
